Architects-in-residence in November: Kristiina Karlsson & Pauliina Koskinen Tonboe

Pauliina Koskinen Tonboe has her own practice Arkitektstudio 3D in Copenhagen where she works as a consulting architect in town planning and 3D visualization. She has been working with public city planning projects in both Finland and Denmark, and also in projects related to private housing, urban design and landscape architecture.

Kristina Karlsson works as an architect in Helsinki running her own office. She has mostly been working in the fields of residential building design, city planning and cultural environment preservation. Besides the office work, she teaches city planning at the Aalto University in Helsinki.

Koskinen Tonboe and Karlsson describe their collaboration: "We have been working together as a team for many years now and have participated in several architectural competitions together. Two good examples are the Open Ideas and design competition of the center and seafront in Åndalsnes held in Norway in 2010, where our entry was awarded the shared 1st prize, and the Open Ideas competition of the Ylläs Villages, held in Finland in 2009-2010, where our entry was awarded the shared 3rd prize."

"In each and every project we do profound research on the sense of the place and try to be responsive to it. We believe that good planning of the physical environment can result in good life. We want to learn new sustainable solutions in human scale, and we want to keep our minds open on them." While in New York, Koskinen Tonboe and Karlsson plan to study sustainable urban projects, solutions in town planning and urban design, and the local life in the city-between-buildings.

"We normally work together in the cyberspace somewhere between Copenhagen and Helsinki, in front of our computers. Now we are looking forward to being able to work face-to-face, drawing a project by a shared desk. In our carry-on we brought a roll of Tervakosken skissi (=sketching paper from Tervakoski, Finland)."
